On Sunday July 26th 2015, the Bonaire Culinary Team 2015 organized an awards dinner with their winning plates to thank all the sponsors who helped and supported them during the year and making the Taste of the Caribbean trip possible. The team made history by winning a gold medal for National Team of the Year 2015, first time that Bonaire received this prestigious recognition. Also on individual level the professional chefs and bartender impressed the judges, senior chef Miguel “Poppy” Saragoza won gold medal and became overall winner in the beef/seafood competition element.
The Bonaire Hotel and Tourism Association (BONHATA) is proud of the Bonaire Culinary Team’s dedication, time they have invested and successes booked during this high level competition. Enjoying the culinary side of all Bonaire has to offer has become increasingly important and popular, our visitors are keen to also explore that aspect of our island and through the participation at Taste of the Caribbean we have motivated chefs and their employers to learn through this competition, grow in their profession, showcase our talent and expand our tourism product.
The Taste of the Caribbean is organized by the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) of which the Bonaire Hotel and Tourism Association (BONHATA) is an active member. Participation at the Taste of the Caribbean was made possible by the following sponsors: Bonaire Hotel and Tourism Association (BONHATA); Bonaire Food Group; Cadushy Distillery; Caribbean Bakery Supplies; InselAir; Rum Runners; Streefkerk architects + consultants; Tourism Corporation Bonaire.
In August two junior chefs will be travelling to Barbados to compete in the Caribbean Junior Duelling Challenge and these two chefs truly have a challenge ahead of them since Bonaire won gold last year!
