This coming Saturday, 25th June, the Cultural Park Mangazina di Rei is hosting a Cultural Market from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at their location on the road to Rincon. The Cultural Market will mark the opening of Mangazina’s latest exhibition that highlights the unique indigenous flora and fauna of the island, as well as the rich heritage of important sites around Rincon, including Kaomati, Porta Spaño and Bototé. The Market will also feature presentations on culturally relevant topics such as how to build a cactus fence and the scarf as part of Bonairean tradition.
The day will begin with a delicious breakfast featuring fresh bread made on location, “Made in Rincon” juice and other delicious goodies prepared by locals. The kitchen opens at 10:00 a.m. to sell soup and traditional dishes like stewed goat, chicken or conch and salted fish. All dishes are served with rice or sides like funchi and tutu. There will also be grilled entrees available.
There will be live music throughout the day by local acoustic band “Sonora Rinconero” and DJ Sherman. Local musician Mr. Hose “Djo” Mercera will present a workshop on the Tradition of San Juan and San Pedro – two important dates celebrated in June. The Tradition of San Juan, observed on 24th June, recognizes anyone whose name derives from Juan, such as Juan, Juanita, Johana, Wancho or John and visits them with a musical serenade. The host prepares food (sorghum pancakes) and drink (rum, beer and kukui – liquor made from the agave plant) for the musicians. On San Pedro, celebrated on 29th June, anyone whose name derives from Pedro is visited and serenaded.
See, Feel & Taste the Culture of Bonaire this Saturday, 25th June, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Cultural Park Mangazina di Rei. Admission is free. For more information, visit Mangazina’s Facebook page or contact Izaïan Mercera at 786-2101 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
